Taylor Caldwell

Janet Miriam Taylor Holland Caldwell (born September 7, 1900 in Prestwich near Manchester , England ; † August 30, 1985 in Greenwich (Connecticut) , USA ) was a journalist and novelist whose books are among the best-sellers of American novels of the 20th century and which has been awarded several prizes.

Life

Caldwell was the daughter of the Scottish art dealer August F. Caldwell, who lived in England, and his wife Anna Caldwell, who emigrated from England to Buffalo , USA with their daughter Taylor and younger brother in 1907 . Taylor Caldwell began writing stories and short stories as a child - up to ten books a year. She remembers that her father often disappeared into the oven with her books.

Taylor Caldwell describes her parents' home as distinctly conservative British (a home with "books, arguments, 'boiled beef' and cabbage"). Her father is said to have had a strange antipathy towards almost anyone who was not Scotch, Presbyterian, or a Caldwell.

1918/1919 Taylor served in the US Navy Reserve. In the following years she worked as a stenographer and court journalist and earned a bachelor's degree through evening visits to the University of Buffalo. In 1919 she married William F. Combs, with whom she lived until their divorce in 1931. With her second husband, Marcus Reback, she published, among other things, her first novel "Dynasty of Death" (1938) and immediately experienced her breakthrough as an author with this first published book. Marcus Reback died in 1970. After she had initially married William Everett Stancell, she went into a fourth marriage in 1978 with her manager William Robert Prestie.

In addition to her work as a novelist, Caldwell also wrote articles for American magazines and was active in conservative movements and organizations.

Taylor Caldwell had been deaf since 1967, barely regaining her ability to speak after two strokes. In 1985 she died of lung cancer as a result of illness.

Writing activity

Although Taylor Caldwell began writing as a child and adolescent, she did not publish her first novel ( Dynasty of Death ) until the age of 38. In this saga ( Dynasty of Death , 1938; Eagles Gather , 1940; The Final Hour , 1944) she tells the story of the intrigues and alliances of two families in Pennsylvania over several generations: From the mid-19th century to the First World War These families develop from arms manufacturers to large groups in the arms industry.

Caldwell's books are predominantly historical novels, stories of relationships, families and dynasties, narratives with a socio-historical background (e.g. antiquity and American history) as well as treatment of biblical characters and narratives in novel form.

The stories take place against the background of American history and deal with immigration and a new beginning, the "American dream", the development from an agricultural economy to an industrial state, entanglements, alliances and intrigues between dynasties and interest groups. Caldwell also takes up tensions based on ethnic and religious diversity and describes conflicts between the pursuit of power and profit on the one hand and the sense of human values ​​on the other.

In addition to and with the family and relationship dramas, Taylor Caldwell dealt with contemporary historical and socio-political issues such as war and peace, power and interest groups, authority and independence in her novels. So she lets one of the figures in the 1976 published novel The end of all innocence ( Ceremony of the Innocent ) to say: "... there will be no peace in the tormented world, only a programmed and systematic series of wars and disasters until the conspirators her Achieved goal: an exhausted world that is ready to submit to a planned Marxist economy and total and gentle slavery - in the name of peace. In Germany, too, the publication of Caldwell's novels was obviously worthwhile. In 1956, under the heading "New in Germany", Der Spiegel commented on the appearance of the German-language version of Das Ende aller Innschuld ( Ceremony of the Innocent ): "Once again, an American money dynasty is shaken by hatred of brotherhoods and unauthorized passion without neglecting business. .. "

Her numerous works (more than 30 novels) have been published under the name Taylor Caldwell , her married name of her second marriage: Janet Miriam Reback, and under the pseudonyms Max Reiner and Marcus Holland. There are translations in a total of eleven languages. Over 30 million copies of her books were sold in her lifetime alone.
