Tearing Down the Spanish Flag is an 1898 American war film made by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith for Vitagraph . The film was one of the first war films ever, but Georges Méliès Combat naval en Grèce was made the previous year.

action

A US soldier removes the Spanish flag from a flag pole and attaches the US flag to it.

background

The film was shot shortly after the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898. It was Blackton's first film. In a small office in Brooklyn , the film was shot with a single take. The use of forced perspective made the Spanish flag appear larger than it actually was.

consequences

The film was successful in the United States and made possible the production of more, more complex films through the financial gain. The Vitagraph company was successful, but first got into trouble due to patent disputes and after the First World War due to the changing economic situation. On April 22, 1925 Vitagraph was Albert E. Smith at Warner Bros. sold.
