Ted Ditchburn (* 24. October 1921 in Gillingham , England ; † 28. December 2005 ; full name Edwin George Ditchburn ) was an English football - goalkeeper . He was born in Gillingham as the son of a professional boxer.

Club career

He made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur in 1939, but had to go to war shortly afterwards. After the war he played for Tottenham until 1956. Ditchburn was in 418 league games for the Spurs on the field, which was a club record by 1975. It is noteworthy that he did not miss a single league match from the first post-war season in 1946/47 to 1953. Even when he broke his finger in May 1951, he played all 42 games in the following season. In the 1950/51 season he was with the Spurs as a climber from the Football League Second Division English champions, which remained his only big title.

From 1956 to 1962 he played for the Romford amateur team.

Career in the national team

He played his first international match for England in 1948 against Switzerland , but was unable to stand out in the high 6-0 victory of his team. After a 3-1 defeat in Sweden in 1949, he lost his place in goal to Bert Williams of Wolverhampton Wanderers . He made his third international match in June 1953 on a North American tour.

In 1956, at the age of 35, he was called back to the national team, and played three more international matches against Yugoslavia , Denmark and Wales . So Ditchburn was "only" six times in the goal of the English national football team .
