Career
As a player
Together with Wayne Gretzky , the native of the Anishinabe tribe played as a junior with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHA . The Detroit Red Wings selected him in the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in the fifth round as 78. At the Kansas City Red Wings in the CHL , he played for the first time in the senior division.
After two and a half seasons with the Adirondack Red Wings , he made his debut with the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. After another 19 games in the 1983/84 season , he left the Red Wings for the Buffalo Sabers . After he had used him only with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League , he returned the following year with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 18 games in the NHL.
As a trainer
In 1988 he took over his former junior team, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds as a trainer. He led the team to the finals of the Memorial Cup three times in a row . In 1993 the greyhounds won the title. In 1994 he moved to the Hartford Whalers as an assistant coach . After a year he moved to the Buffalo Sabers as head coach. There he was very successful for two years, but fell out with the goalkeeper Dominik Hašek and general manager John Muckler . This removed the basis for further cooperation and so he was replaced by Lindy Ruff .
He turned down offers as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning and as assistant coach with the New York Islanders .
He only returned to ice hockey in 2005. He coached the Moncton Wildcats in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League during this time he had to deal with racist attacks in a game against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens . The New York Islanders tried to sign him during the season, but Nolan wanted to fulfill his contract in Moncton. After the end of the season he came to an agreement with the Islanders and took over the team for the 2006/07 season . After the Islanders had been outside the playoff places for a long time, they finally managed to qualify in the last game of the season, but failed in the first round. In the 2007/08 season , however, they missed the playoffs and in the summer of 2008, the team separated from Nolan. After a time with Rochester Americans , he coached the Latvian national ice hockey team between 2011 and 2014 . From November 13, 2013 he also trained the Buffalo Sabers again. The Sabers fired him after the 2014/15 season, which ended the team in last place.
From July 2017 to May 2018 he was the coach of the Polish national ice hockey team .
