Edward "Ted" Jenkins Smith (born June 14, 1886 in Pennsylvania , † June 19, 1949 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American art director and set designer who was particularly active during his work for Warner Bros. from 1936 to 1949 Specialized in the equipment of westerns and often worked with the film directors Raoul Walsh and Michael Curtiz and was nominated twice for the Oscar for best production design.

Life

Smith began his career as an art director and set designers in the film industry in Hollywood in 1927 with that of Charles Brabin staged silent movie battle in the Valley of the Giants (The Valley of the Giants) with Milton Sills , Doris Kenyon and Arthur Stone . Nine years later he began working for Warner Bros. in 1936 and was involved in the directing of over 70 films during his career that lasted until his death in 1949.

At the Academy Awards in 1943 he was nominated for the first Oscar for best production design, with Casey Roberts for the color film Heroes of the Clouds (Captains of the Clouds, 1942), a Michael Curtiz directed war film with James Cagney , Dennis Morgan and Brenda Marshall .

Smith received his second Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in a Color Film in 1946 with Jack McConaghy for the David Butler- directed western A Man of Action (San Antonio, 1945) in which Errol Flynn , Alexis Smith and Victor Francen played the leading roles.
