Tegata ( Japanese 手 形 'hand shape' ) are a special form of autograph that is only known in Japanese sumo wrestling . Instead of a signature, these rice paper sheets bear the handprint of the respective wrestler in red or black next to the wrestler's battle name ( Shikona ) in calligraphic letters. In addition, there are often stamps that indicate the time of manufacture, e.g. B. a special tournament, or record the rank of the wrestler.

Besides banzuke , tegata are popular collectibles. In addition to the coveted "hand-made" ones, printed Tegata are also available at a lower price.

The use of this type of autograph has been documented for a long time. Representations of sumo wrestlers making tegata can be found on centuries-old woodcuts ( Ukiyo-e ).
