The Temple of Derr is an ancient Egyptian rock temple of the hemispeos type , the king ( pharaoh ) Ramses II. In the 13th century BC. Was built on the east bank of the Nile in Nubia west of Amada . The approximately 37-meter-long building, which was called "House of Ramses-loved-of- Amun (= Ramses II.) In the House of Re ", is one of the larger rock temples in Egypt and had two pillared halls. Some of the pillars were specially made or cut out of the rock.
The design of the temple resembles the great rock temple of Abu Simbel . Like this, the temple of Derr was also dedicated to the gods Amun-Re , Ptah , Re-Harachte and the king himself. Compared to the large temple, the statues are missing on the facade, but there were two large colossi of the king at the entrance . The Temple of Derr was badly damaged. In the days of the early Christians in the country, it had been used as a church and parts of the wall decorations were destroyed. One of the surviving reliefs is one that shows a procession of the royal children of Ramses II.
In the course of the construction of the Aswan High Dam , the temple was cut out of the original rock in 1964 and, like other temples in the area, moved to New Amada and partially rebuilt there.
