In 2013 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame . His father Kalevi and brother Teemu were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Numminen began his career in the Finnish SM-liiga at Tappara Tampere. In the 1986 NHL Entry Draft , those in charge of the Winnipeg Jets secured the transfer rights of the right-handed shooter when they selected him in 29th position in the second round. The Finn then stayed in Tampere until the end of the 1987/88 season and then moved to the NHL for the Winnipeg Jets in the summer of 1988. During the lockout in the 1994/95 season , he completed 12 games for TuTo Turku , which at that time still played in the SM-Liiga. After the resumption of play in the National Hockey League, however, he returned to North America.
When the Jets moved to Arizona in 1996 and played there as Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL, Numminen followed the club and stayed with the Coyotes until 2002/03 . He spent the following season with the Dallas Stars before he joined the Buffalo Sabers in the summer of 2005, with whom he still has a contract. In the summer of 2006, Numminen had to undergo an operation due to cardiac arrhythmia . He got an additional year contract with the Sabers.
After the 2005/06 season , Numminen was only 17 games away from breaking the record of his compatriot Jari Kurri for the most NHL games by a European during the regular season, Kurri completed 1251 games in the regular season. The Finnish defender became the European record holder for NHL games the following season. He played on the night of November 15, 2006 in the 7-4 victory of the Buffalo Sabers in Carolina, his 1252nd NHL game. The 38-year-old overtook his compatriot Jari Kurri, who retired in 1998. After Numminen career end his record was during the 2009-10 season by Nicklas Lidstrom broken.
Numminen completed a total of 20 NHL seasons, which is also a European record. He played in Winnipeg for eight years, seven years for the successor franchise Phoenix, one year in Dallas and four years in Buffalo. On January 30, 2010, his jersey number 27 was banned by the Phoenix Coyotes.
For the 2012/13 season he was hired as an assistant coach for his former NHL team Buffalo Sabers . His contract with the Sabers was not renewed after the 2013/14 season.
International
Numminen represented the Finnish national team in 1987 and 1991 at the Canada Cup, 1996, 1997 and 2004 at the Ice Hockey World Championship , 1996 and 2004 at the World Cup of Hockey , and in 1988, 1998 and 2006 at the Winter Olympics .
