After 268 BC The Praetuttii received Roman citizenship and their city received the Latin name Interamna , which means "between two rivers"; because the urban area is crossed by the two rivers Vezzola and Tordino . After the alliance war (91-88 BC) Interamna became a Roman municipality ; In addition, a Colonia was set up in Sulla times .
Teramo was a flourishing city during the Roman Empire , but then fell into disrepair in the Middle Ages and only partially recovered after the unification of Italy in 1861 ( Risorgimento ).

Attractions
- Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
Remains of the city's oldest sacred building can be seen under a glass floor in the cathedral. In the 6th century a church called S. Maria Aprutiensis was built here on the foundations of a previous Roman building. This building was destroyed by Norman troops. Then today's cathedral was built.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was completed between 1156 and 1170. The campanile also dates from the second half of the 12th century. The building was expanded considerably in the 14th century. The upper section of the facade has been completely renewed and raised, the portal from 1332 comes from Master Deodatus, probably a member of the Kosmaten family; the wooden doors from the Renaissance are copies. In the first half of the 18th century the church was redesigned in Baroque style . During a restoration in 1935, some later insertions were reversed.
In the church there is the valuable altar ceiling by Nicola da Guardiagrele from around 1433–1448 and a polyptych by the Venetian artist Jacobello del Fiore .
Events
The city hosts a variety of events, the most famous of which is the “Coppa Interamnia”, a handball tournament in which junior teams from different countries take part. Another typical event is the Maratonina Pretuziana ( marathon ), which takes place on May 1st each year.
Furthermore, in Teramo, as in other larger cities, the “Notte Bianca” (White Night) takes place. The premiere took place on September 25, 2004. Various artists took part and it was a great success, which led the organizers to successfully repeat the event on September 10, 2005. 70,000 people took part - more than live in the city.
A motorcycle meeting took place from September 23rd to September 25th, 2005, attended by 1,300 Harley-Davidson motorcycle fans from all over Italy.
