The Terek ( Russian Терек ; Georgian თერგი / Tergi ; Ossetian Терк / Terk ; Kabardian Тэрч / Tartsch ; Ingush Тийрк / Tijrk ; Chechen Терка / Terka ) is a 623 km long tributary of the Caspian Sea in the Caucasus .

Course and general

The Terek flows in about 3200  m from a glacier on the northeast flank of the 3,857 m high mountain Silgachoch (Silgi-Choch), south of the Kazbek in the Greater Caucasus , in northern Georgia . It circles the Kazbek and initially flows north through the Darial Gorge into Russia . The river continues north through the North Ossetian capital of Vladikavkaz , only to turn east at the level of Mozdok . The Terek then flows through Chechnya and Dagestan . Below Kisljar it forms a swampy, 4000 km² river delta .

The Russian football club Terek Grozny was named after the little north of the city named by leading river, the historic Terek Cossack Army after the catchment area of the river.

use

On its lower reaches the Terek is used for irrigation , on the upper reaches of the operation of hydropower plants .
