Life
The son of a Ford employee and a housewife left school prematurely at the age of 14 to become a jazz musician . Until he was 18, when he had to join the British Army , he was a drummer in a band.
After his military service he worked as a flight attendant at British Airways (BA) with the ulterior motive of getting cheaply to the USA , where he wanted to make a career as a musician. At the same time, he applied as a photographer at BA in the technical photography department. The training included photographing aircraft facilities and airport reports.
The British newspaper Daily Sketch noticed him through his snapshot of the British Interior Minister, which O'Neill had taken while he was sleeping in the airport building, and hired the young photographer. He later moved to the Sunday Dispatch for £ 75 a week . He first worked in London and photographed the Beatles , the Rolling Stones and the model Twiggy , among others . In the 1970s he went to Hollywood , where he met Fred Astaire , Liz Taylor and Frank Sinatra and worked for the magazines Playboy and Life , among others .
According to his own statement, his best photo is Faye Dunaway in 1977 on the morning after the Academy Awards for Network at the swimming pool of the Beverly Hills Hotel. His son Liam (* 1980) comes from the connection with the actress, whom he only married in 1983 but separated from her again in 1987. Most recently, O'Neill lived in London with his third wife, a model agent .
O'Neill's photos are on display at the National Portrait Gallery (London) . The "Terry O'Neill Award" named after him, of which he was also a member, is given annually to British independent photographers.
