action

The Afro-American Easy Rawlins was a soldier in the Second World War . In 1948 he was looking for a job in Los Angeles . His friend Joppy introduces him to the white DeWitt Albright, who offers him $ 100 if Rawlins finds Daphne Monet in hiding. Monet, a friend of the wealthy politician Todd Carter, spends her free time in jazz clubs in South Los Angeles.

Rawlins is looking for the woman and is involved in two murders. It turns out that DeWitt Albright is actually working for the politician's competitor, Matthew Terell, who wants to prove that Daphne is partly of African descent in order to eliminate Carter in the upcoming election. She also has photos that prove this politician is a pedophile . Because of this, the murders were committed to kill the people who also knew about these photos. In reality, DeWitt and Joppy had done it for him, only to then blame it on him. When Rawlins finds out by establishing contact with Todd Carter, the latter hires him for a lot of money to save Daphne. When Easy later talks to Daphne about it, she is kidnapped by DeWitt and two of his men, not realizing that Rawlins knows about everything.

He then kidnaps Joppy with the help of a friend, getting him to tell where Daphne is, who they plan to kill after they have the photos and evidence of their relationship with Todd. He manages to save her life, whereby he can also recover the photos. DeWitt and his two men are killed while Joppy is killed by Easy's boyfriend when he was about to forcibly flee because of his crimes. Rawlins then goes to Carter, who pays him well for the work and as a thank you for the photos he also gives him to kill Matthew Terell, he makes sure that the police leave him alone about the murders in the future. Daphne later leaves town in grief when she realizes that Carter can no longer have a relationship with her due to the circumstances.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film kept the audience interested after the first half hour with a "slower" pace. The most interesting thing, however, is not the plot, but the characters' motivation.

The lexicon of international films wrote: “The amazingly quiet and sensitive story is combined with a careful, atmospherically dense reconstruction of the living conditions of the black population of Los Angeles in 1948 to make a revealing historical excursion into the origins of social grievances in America today. Models of the classic "film noir" are processed in an independent and captivating way. "

Awards

The film, its soundtrack, Jennifer Beals and Don Cheadle were nominated for an Image Award in 1996. Don Cheadle won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award in 1995 and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1996. Carl Franklin was nominated for the Golden Seashell of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián in 1995 ; In 1996 he was nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award . Don Cheadle and Tak Fujimoto won the National Society of Film Critics Award in 1996 .
