The Texas Theater in Oak Cliff, Dallas

The Texas Theater is a theater building in Oak Cliff , a suburb of Dallas ( Texas ).

The theater was built by tool maker and film producer Howard Hughes as part of his theater chain. On the day it opened on April 21, 1931 , it was considered the largest suburban theater in Dallas and one of the most modern due to its projection technology and sound equipment.

It became part of contemporary history on November 22, 1963 when Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested here for the alleged murder of US President John F. Kennedy and police officer JD Tippit .

After the building was temporarily closed in 1989, the front facade was renovated in 1991 by film director Oliver Stone for his film JFK - Tatort Dallas . It was finally closed in 1995 after a fire that destroyed the film screen and part of the roof. Ultimately, the Texas Theater was restored in 2003 as part of a large-scale inner-city renovation plan. That same year, on April 1, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Today, in addition to its function as a cinema and show stage, the theater also serves as a community space for the district.
