The Thatcher Peninsula is a mountainous peninsula in the northern part of central- south Georgia , which ends in the north with the headland Mai Point . The peninsula separates Cumberland West Bay in the west from Cumberland East Bay and Moraine Fjord in the east. In the southwest and in the south it is bounded by the Lyell Glacier and the Hamberg Glacier . King Edward Cove on the east side of the peninsula is the location of the British Antarctic Survey station ; The former whaling station Grytviken is about 800 meters away .
The peninsula was named in 1991 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee on a proposal from members of the Royal Geographical Society after Margaret Thatcher , who was British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 .
