The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is a 1943 American animated short film directed by George Pal .

action

The king is touring his kingdom. Every subject takes off his hat to him, only the young Bartholomew Cubbins keeps his. The King tells him to take off his hat and Bartholomew Cubbins takes off the pointed hat, but a new hat appears immediately. He tries again, but always a new hat of various types and shapes appears. Soon Bartholomew Cubbins is surrounded by hundreds of hats that he has taken off for the king, but he is still wearing a hat.

The king gives orders to arrest Bartholomew Cubbins. He is taken to the castle, where a final attempt is made to make Bartholomew Cubbins hatless: an archer shoots the hat on the wall, but a new hat immediately appears on the boy's head. Now the King Bartholomew wants to have Cubbins executed. The law, however, requires that the person to be executed not wear a hat on the scaffold, so that the execution must be stopped at the last second. The king finally gives up. For a splendid hat he offers Bartholomew Cubbins his royal crown and money. Bartholomew Cubbins can now remove the hat from his head and replace it with the crown. With the royal crown, Bartholomew Cubbins is released, while the king rules with a hat on his head, which he never took off - perhaps because he did not dare.

production

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is based on the story of the same name by Dr. Seuss, which appeared in German-speaking countries under the title Die 500 Hüte des Barthel Löwenspross . George Pal realized the story as a puppet trick in stop motion , but changed aspects of the literary model. Bartholomew Cubbins' hats are always identical in the template and only become more and more elaborate after 400 hats. At Pal, however, the hats change shape and color from the start. Pal also solved the end differently than the original. The film was released on April 30, 1943 as part of the Madcap Models Theatrical Cartoon Series or the series Puppetoon and was distributed by Paramount Pictures .

Awards

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1944 , but could not prevail against Tom plays fireworks .
