The Ballad of Cat Ballou is a 1965 song composed by Jerry Livingston . Mack David wrote the text . In the version sung by Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye , it was used for the film Cat Ballou . The song received an Oscar nomination for Best Song category .

In the film, the song is sung in the style of Greek choirs by two traveling musicians, played by Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye. The song tells the story of Catherine Ballou (based on the novel The Ballad of Cat Ballou by Roy Chanslor ), played in the film by Jane Fonda , who turns from a well-behaved young lady into an outlaw.
