history

Initiator Guy Laliberté (2009)

The Canadian entrepreneur Guy Laliberté initiated the Big One for One Drop , in which the No Limit Hold'em variant is played. He founded the non-profit One Drop Foundation , which advocates unconditional access to clean drinking water in crisis areas. A portion of every buy-in of one million dollars (or euros) goes directly to his organization. In the first three issues, this portion was $ 111,111 (or euros) each, in July 2018 $ 80,000. In total, Laliberté has so far been able to collect more than $ 15 million for his foundation. In 2013 , 2015 , 2016 and 2017 , the World Series of Poker (WSOP) held the High Roller for One Drop instead of the Big One , which requires a buy-in of $ 111,111 and 3.5% of the prize pool benefit the foundation. In October 2016 , the Big One for One Drop Extravaganza was played outside of the WSOP in Monte-Carlo , which was the most expensive poker tournament in the world with a buy-in of one million euros up to the Triton Million for Charity in August 2019. It was only accessible to recreational players invited by Laliberté. At the beginning of November 2017, the tournament was announced at the World Series of Poker 2018 .
