In 1884, The Capital was founded under the name Evening Gazette . The Sunday Capital has been published since 1987 . The journal The Gazette was founded in 1727 by William Parks as The Maryland Gazette in Annapolis.

On June 28, 2018, the Capital Gazette was assassinated . The perpetrator entered the premises of the “Capital Gazette Communication” publishing house at 888 Bestgate Road in Annapolis at around 2:32 pm in military uniform. The man opened fire with a shotgun and shot through a glass door. He threw stun grenades. Five people died and two others were injured in the attack. All victims were employees of the publishing house. The columnist of Capital Gazette Gerald Fishman, editor of the Baltimore Sun Rob Hiaasen, the sportscaster John McNamara, the community news reporter Wendi Winters and sales assistant Rebecca Smith were killed. The perpetrator is said to be a man who had been in dispute with the newspaper's editorial team for years.

In December 2018, Time elected so-called “Guardians in the War for Truth” as Person of the Year 2018. The editorial staff of The Capital was elected to these “Guardians”; it adorns one of the four covers of Time magazine that announce the person of the year.
