action

The psychologist Catherine uses an experimental therapy technique to penetrate the subconscious of her coma patients to help them wake up again. Your current patient is a young boy who has been in a schizophrenic coma for a while. However, the therapy proceeds without any significant progress. The technology consists of an electronic network of the brain activity of the psychologist and the patient, which gives them access to their thoughts and memories.

In the middle of their attempts to gain access to the boy, they confront FBI agents with an explosive request. She is supposed to immerse herself in the thoughts of the insane serial killer Carl, who is also in a coma after a seizure, in order to find out the hiding place of his last victim. According to the FBI's findings, the woman was abducted and is being held captive in a chamber that is automatically flooded with water after about 40 hours.

Catherine delves deep into the killer’s sick mind during her journey. She does not succeed in finding out where the kidnapped woman was hidden in this way. However, she learns a lot of details about the family background of Carl's personality, in particular about the relationship with his father, which is heavily influenced by violent and emotional abuse. But in doing so, Catherine is so seized by the personality of the murderer that she gets lost in his thoughts and memories and cannot find her way out on her own. FBI agent Peter Novak follows her as a last resort. He is captured and tortured there, but can finally convince her again that she is not in reality. In addition, he discovers clues to the whereabouts of the kidnapped woman in Carl's mental images and can take the necessary steps to rescue her just in time. At the last second, the woman is released from her glass case. Meanwhile, Catherine enters Carl's subconscious one last time.
