The Five Satins are an American doo-wop group. Her biggest hit was In the Still of the Night in 1956 .

Career

Fred Parris (2007)

The group was founded in 1955 by Fred Parris (born March 26, 1936) in his hometown of New Haven , Connecticut . Parris previously directed a quintet called "The Scarlets," which had a local hit in New York in 1954 with Dear One . The founding members of the Five Satins were alongside Parris Lou Peebles, Stanley Dortch, Ed Martin and Jim Freeman.

While Dortch and Peebles soon left the group, Al Denby (who was previously active with the Scarlets) came as a new member. In this four-member line-up, the Five Satins recorded In the Still of the Night , which was released in the spring of 1956 as the B-side of The Jones Girl . The Parris wrote In the Still of the Night peaked at # 3 on the US R & B - Charts and managed in the US pop charts at number 24. From the magazine Rolling Stone was the song at number 90 of the 500 greatest songs of all time elected.

Parris had to do his military service in Japan. With the new members Bill Baker, Tommy Killebrew and Jessie Murphy, plus Freeman and Martin, the Five Satins had another hit: To The Aisle made it into the R&B top 10 in 1957. Upon Parris' return, the Five Satins consisted of Parris, Lou Peebles, Sylvester Hopkins (previously with the Scarlets), Richie Freeman and West Forbes. In 1959 they had a minor hit with Shadows .

In 1960, In the Still of the Night hit the charts again after appearing on a compilation , and in 1987 it was on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack . The Five Satins were still on stage in different line-ups and had some minor record successes, most recently in 1982 with the medley Memories of Days Gone By . In the mid-1970s they traded under the name "Black Satin" for some time. Some of the original Five Satins, including Fred Parris, still perform together at festivals today.

Awards

In 1998 the Five Satins received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation . In 2003 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame .
