Terry Clark (vocals), Andy Bown (bass), Tony Chapman (drums) and Gary Taylor (guitar) founded the band in Beckenham (London) in 1965 . Clark left the band in 1967 and was replaced by Peter Frampton (guitar, vocals). Taylor switched to bass and Andy Bown took over the keyboards. Andrew Steele was now on the drums.

After a few unsuccessful singles , a number of hits emerged in collaboration with the songwriters Ken Howard & Alan Blaikley , who were also responsible for several successes by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich , including From The Underworld (1967, No. 6 in the UK charts ), Paradise Lost , (1968, number 15) and I Don't Want Our Loving To Die (1968, number 5).

After that, the success subsided and the band gradually broke up. First, Henry Spinetti replaced drummer Steele. Frampton left the group to start the band Humble Pie with Steve Marriott . Andy Bown took over the vocals. After further success failed, The Herd disbanded in 1971. A second album, which was recorded with Frampton, remained unreleased.

Bown and Spinetti formed the short-lived band Judas Jump with saxophonists Mike Smith and Allen Jones from Amen Corner and singer Adrian Williams . In 1971 Taylor, who was now a disc jockey , and Steele produced the single You Got Me Hangin 'From Your Lovin' Tree .

Andy Bown has been a member of the Status Quo group since 1976 . Gary Taylor joined Gerry Rafferty's band and took part in his world hit Baker Street .

Worth mentioning

The musician Bob Young worked briefly as a stage worker ( roadie ) for The Herd in the late 1960s . But he was poached by Status Quo, for which he was touring manager. He then worked for Status Quo for many years and met Andy Bown again in 1976, with whom he occasionally wrote songs together.
