action

In the remote settlement of Loup in the American Midwest , three women have lost their minds because of the harsh living conditions . Mary Bee Cuddy, a single, devout farmer, agrees to take her to a Methodist parish in Iowa where she may be healed. For the long, dangerous journey, she gets help from an aged day thief who calls himself George Briggs for lack of alternatives. He has taken a farm, the owner of which was in the east on a bride's gaze, and should therefore be hanged. Cuddy saves him from certain death.

When an Indian attack threatens on the trip, Briggs can defuse the situation by offering the warriors a horse as a gift. Cuddy, who was desperately looking for a man to run the farm with her before the trip, is also trying to win George over. When the freedom lover refuses, she asks him to have sex instead. The next morning he finds her hanging dead from a tree. George takes Cuddy's money and for a moment thinks of running away, although he knows for sure that the three women are helpless without him. But when the women run after him, he takes pity on them and reverently continues his mission in Cuddy's name.

The travelers find a hotel in solitude. However, they are denied food and lodging because the owner is waiting for investors to buy plots near the hotel. Briggs is kicked out of the hotel. At night he returns, sets the building and all of its residents on fire and steals food for the starving women and himself.

When he handed over his “freight” to the pastor's wife, he was doing well thanks to the generous remuneration. He changes his clothes and orders a wooden plaque with an inscription for Cuddy's grave. His own reward has become worthless because of the bankruptcy of the Loup bank.

The lawless predator seems to have become a compassionate, responsible man. In the end he falls for the whiskey again and Cuddy's plaque is lost in the river.

The Los Angeles Times wrote, "Swank and Jones [...] are a successful bizarre couple who embody good and bad, but occasionally switch roles". The industry journal Variety said, unlike other actor-directors, Jones did not give his character anything exuberant. Although the characters are convincing, the depictions are generally inconspicuous. The Hollywood Reporter judged the film to be "a gripping, melancholy look at the tough lot of women of the day." The film is "both soulful and shocking, strangely funny and bitterly serious".

The film-dienst described the film as an "excellent adaptation of the novel " with "a good portion of bizarre and terrifying bursts of madness and depression", which set a monument to the "forgotten women pioneers". The change in the narrative perspective in the middle of the film was criticized, "which causes the film to lose density". The Cinema Although praised the "images of barren beauty" and "outstanding [n] achievements" of the performers, but described the film as "brittle [s] Wild West drama" that "a bleak, indeed hopeless mood" spread. Anke Sterneborg from epd Film praised the film and awarded it 4 out of 5 stars. Babel cameraman Rodrigo Prieto made “the unruly landscape the third leading actor and” gave “the barren prairie the silvery sheen of old daguerreotypes again and again”, the “soundtrack by Marco Beltrami” underlined “the tension of the travelers”. Tommy Lee Jones does not pursue old myths, but illuminates "the dark sides of American history".
