The Jaywalker is a 1956 American animated short film directed by Robert Cannon .

action

A man stands in a pedestrian crowd at a traffic light . He explains to the viewer that he looks normal, but is actually a jaywalker , i.e. a careless person who endangers traffic. He used to cross the street like any other person, use the traffic lights or look out for cars. One day, however, he saw a friend across the street and ran off. Only on the other side of the street did he realize that he hadn't even looked at the traffic.

The man subsequently developed his “talent” at crossing the street as dangerously as possible. He used various strategies, such as faking a lane crossing, suddenly appearing out of nowhere and the provocative appearance of the superior pedestrian. Although the man was taken into custody by the police, received a judicial warning, and spent hours with the psychiatrist , he could not be cured. At the end he recommends the viewer to choose an inanimate back street for the first exercises and praises jaywalking as a life enrichment . Then he floats away as an angel towards heaven.

production

The Jaywalker was released in Technicolor on May 31, 1956 . The narrator of the film is Eugene Bollay .

Awards

The Jaywalker was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1957 , but could not prevail against Magoo's Puddle Jumper . All of the Oscar-nominated films of the year were Bosustow productions by the UPA.
