action
John Henry has been familiar with the hammer since he was a child, and when he grew up he became a blasthole hammer. As such, he works on laying the rails for the new railway. He loves his job and his girlfriend Polly Ann, whom he marries. Polly Ann suspects that her husband will one day give up his life for his job. One day John Henry is assigned to work on the mountain into which a tunnel for the railroad is to be driven. When his supervisor decides that the blast holes should be done with new steam-powered hammers instead of manual labor, John Henry enters a man-to-machine duel. He wins the competition against the machine, but collapses dead shortly after the work is done.
