The Morning Spider is a 1976 British comedy short film directed by Claude Chagrin .

action

A spider hopes to be caught in its web, but the threads are not tight enough for the smallest flies. A blue dragonfly retires not far from the web and flies away when the spider tries to hang on to it. A caterpillar ignores the spider and several flies laugh at it while making sure to stay out of the spider's range. A swarm of mosquitoes stings the spider and a bumblebee eventually destroys the web. The spider lies depressed in the remains of the web, which now only serve as a hammock. At night a pack of crickets makes noise and even the millipede, which noisily pulls off all the stockings from its feet, does not let the spider sleep. Eventually a storm comes up and the rest of the network is destroyed too.

The next morning the spider tries in vain to spin a new web. With a small net umbrella she can finally catch the dragonfly, but lets herself be softened by her pleading gaze. The dragonfly escapes. Shortly afterwards, the spider discovers a single web thread that it follows. After a while the male appears on the web of a red female spider. This initially reacts unfriendly, but finds the spider man likeable when it begins to play melodies on the spider woman's web. Male and female spiders get closer. The intimate togetherness is suddenly interrupted when a glowing cigarette butt lands in front of the network. All the insects run away in a hurry.

production

After The Concert (1974) and The Christmas Tree (1975), The Morning Spider was the last of three films that Julian Chagrin made with his then-wife Claude in the mid-1970s. Chagrin had learned to play pantomime in Paris ; the film has no dialogue. The film was first released in 1976 and was shown in cinemas as a supporting film for Taxi Driver .

Awards

The Morning Spider was nominated for an Oscar in 1977 for Best Short Film. He won awards at both the Cork International Film Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival (Best Picture).
