action

At the time of the Arab Spring in January 2011, the Briton Jonathan Pine worked as a night manager in a luxury hotel in Cairo . Sophie Alekan, the lover of Freddie Hamids, a member of a powerful Egyptian family clan, gives the hotel manager copies of some explosive documents for her safety, which prove an illegal arms deal between the Hamid clan and a British businessman named Richard Onslow Roper. Pine recognizes the explosiveness of the documents and passes them on to the British embassy. But the British authorities do not intervene. Instead, Roper receives a warning about the betrayal. A short time later, Sophie is murdered.

Four years later, Pine works as a night manager in a Swiss hotel. He has still not got over the death of Sophie, which he came close to before she was murdered. One night, the man whose name he heard four years earlier in Cairo is staying at his hotel: Richard Onslow Roper. In his wake is his young lover Jed Marshall, whom Pine is instantly fascinated by. The night manager turns to the British authorities again, but this time he reaches Angela Burr directly, the head of a small, newly established department that competes with MI6 , which has long been trying to put an end to the arms dealer Roper against political resistance.

Burr developed the idea of infiltrating Pine into Roper's inner circle as an informant. He is given a false identity that makes him appear as a criminal in hiding without scruples. He wins Roper's trust by thwarting a fictitious kidnapping of his son. After several doubts about Roper's close colleague Major Corkoran, he himself rises to the arms dealer’s right hand. He discovers that employees of the British State Department and MI6 are on Roper's payroll, whereupon Burr and her American counterpart Steadman continue the mission, bypassing the intelligence services of their countries. But when an alleged arms deal turns out to be a harmless grain delivery when the American military seizes it, both are disempowered.

Burr plans to pull Pine after he begins a love affair with Jed that is about to be discovered, but Pine does not want to give up the mission. He sends Burr a message that a new arms deal is planned in Cairo. He meets Freddie Hamid in his old hotel and kills him after learning that Sophie's murder was actually arranged by Roper. Meanwhile, Jed has been exposed as a traitor and tortured. Pine is exposed as a traitor, but still thwarts the arms deal with a violent detonation. Burr and Steadman intervene and arrest Roper. He remains calm and expects his early release due to his contacts in the highest political circles. But when he is taken away, he ends up in the hands of his Arab trading partners, whom he previously insulted badly and whose down payment for the weapons in the amount of 300 million dollars he cannot repay after their destruction and a secret transfer by Pine, and leaves one towards uncertain fate. After one last carefree night with Pine, Jed travels home to her family, while Pine stays at the Cairo hotel.

production

The series was broadcast on free TV in German-speaking countries in August and September 2016. A special cut version with smaller cuts was used, which consists of only three episodes in feature length. On Swiss television, the series was broadcast on SRF 1 on three consecutive Saturdays from August 27, 2016, in Austria on ORF one on three Sundays from August 28, 2016 and on German television on ZDF from August 29, 2016 on three consecutive Mondays .

As in the films Dame, König, As, Spion and A Most Wanted Man , author John le Carré can be seen in a cameo . In an argument in a seafood restaurant, he plays a guest who has to be appeased by Tom Hiddleston.

Reviews

In the UK, the series received positive reviews after it aired. Kevin O'Sullivan even spoke of "one of the greatest series of all time" in The Sun. According to Archie Bland in The Guardian , The Night Manager is "as pimped up as a TV series can be" and has "true international stars" in its two leading roles, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. John le Carré called it an "unexpected miracle" after two film adaptations of the novel had previously failed. Only the length of the six-hour TV series does justice to the book for le Carré's biographer Adam Sisman in The Daily Telegraph .

The German-language reviews were also mostly positive. David Denk describes in the Süddeutsche Zeitung "an adaptation that is as contemporary as it is stylish". For Hannah Pilarczyk in Spiegel Online , the series is “more likely to take the pleasant glamor route” than, for example, Tomas Alfredson's dark agent film Dame, König, As, Spion , but it is a “high-gloss production that enjoys its great ensemble and its production values […] have fun".

Comparisons with James Bond have been drawn several times. Anna Meinecke on n-tv sees a "test run for 007" in the series for the main actor Tom Hiddleston. For Christian Alt on BR Puls , the series wants “to be as cool as James Bond, but drives with the handbrake on all the time.” After a few episodes, however, the series pulls in and develops “into the big hit announced”. For Sabine Horst in epd Film, on the other hand, “the Bond clichés in particular […] become doomed”, because they do not suit an adversary who does not join the ranks of “comic villains” but threatens children with poison gas.
