action

Bettie Page ( Gretchen Mol ) , who comes from a poor, religiously conservative background in Tennessee , meets a police officer with photographic ambitions who introduces her to other photographers. Page initially models for photographer clubs, sometimes also naked. In the early 1950s, photos of her appear on the covers of men's magazines and she models for the photographer Irving Klaw , who distributes photographs with bondage and sadomasochistic motifs by mail. She becomes the first known bondage model.

Eventually she gets caught in the crosshairs of a Senate committee on pornography . Originally also from Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver , in the film played by David Strathairn , she takes the cross-examination and wants to promote through them his crusade against the alleged moral decay by pornography.
