history

Thomas J. Dryer - Oregon.png

This magazine was one of the leading daily newspapers in the northwestern United States in the 19th century and the only newspaper published in the seven northwestern states for years. It was founded in 1850 by Thomas Jefferson Dryer (1808–1879) as a weekly newspaper and published until 1860. At that time Portland had around 700 residents. Dryer was named U.S. Commissioner for the Sandwich Islands by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861 . The magazine was then headed by the typographer and printer Henry Pittock (1835-1919) and has appeared as a daily newspaper since 1861. The work, which is considered politically independent, received regional and national recognition for the quality of the editorial work. New technologies such as telegraphic transmission were incorporated. In 1950 the paper was sold to Samuel I Newhouse, whose family continues to own the property through Advance Publications Inc.

The newspaper's forerunner was the Oregon Spectator , which appeared for five years from 1846.
