The Sky at Night

The Sky at Night is the BBC's monthly series on astronomy . Its host was Patrick Moore until his death in December 2012 , who had hosted this series without interruption since it was first broadcast on April 24, 1957. It was entered in the Guinness Book of Records for this . Only the program in July 2004 was Moore unable to moderate due to an acute salmonella disease. He was represented in this show by Chris Lintott from the University of Oxford . On April 1, 2007, the show celebrated its 50th birthday in a special program entitled "Time Travel", in which Jon Culshaw also appeared.

Content of the broadcast

The show covers a wide range of astronomical and space- related topics. Both basic topics such as the formation of stars , radio astronomy , satellites , black holes , neutron stars and current topics such as the meteor swarms Leonids and Perseids and the flyby of Comet Halley are dealt with.

Guests

Guests are in the show at irregular intervals. Among them were the leading astronomers, including Harlow Shapley , Fred Hoyle, and Carl Sagan . Brian May , guitarist for the band Queen and PhD in astrophysics, is also an occasional guest on the show.

recognition

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of The Sky at Night the named International Astronomical Union an asteroid on the name (57424) Caelumnoctu . The naming is based on the latinized form of the name and the numbering of the asteroid is based on the date of the first broadcast.

The Royal Mail issued a series of six special stamps for the anniversary .
