The Vines is an Australian rock band . They are considered to be an influential indie rock band in the early 2000s and the successor to the grunge wave in the mid-1990s. In addition to the two commercially successful albums Highly Evolved (2002) and Winning Days (2004), the group was particularly noticeable through several antics of their singer Craig Nicholls , which reminded of Kurt Cobain . In 2006 the band disappeared from the media, but is still active today.

history

Craig Nicholls , Patrick Matthews and David Oliffe met in high school and later worked at the fast food chain McDonald's . The band was originally founded under the name Rishikesh , referring to the Indian town of the same name where the Beatles visited an ashram in 1968 , but the name was always misspelled in the newspapers. The band chose The Vines as its new name, based on the name of the band The Vynes , a former band of his father's, which performed in the Sydney area with Elvis-Presley covers. At first, Nicholl's band played cover songs from Nirvana , and they quickly started recording their own material. When she first appeared at a friends house at a party, Craig Nicholls was so nervous that he had a nervous breakdown and was unable to play.

In 2001 the band released the first professional recording, the EP Factory . It became NME's Single of the Week in November 2001. The success story of the three Australians finally began in February 2002 after embarking on an 18-month tour of the United States , Europe and Australia . Initially, the single Highly Evo0lved reached number 32 on the British music charts. Their debut album of the same name sold 1.5 million times worldwide. Appearances on the Late Night Show David Letterman , but above all the live version of Get Free at the MTV Video Music Awards 2002 made her known worldwide in a very short time. In Australia they received an ARIA award for best newcomer.

Frontman Nicholls was described by the British music magazine NME as a "psycho" who "could go nuts at any moment". At the time, coverage ran counter to efforts by bandmates and friends to stabilize Nicholls' already unstable mental state. She made him a worthy musical successor to Kurt Cobain , with which she put enormous pressure on the front man, but some time later attested that he was completely unable to contain himself.

In the further course of the previous drummer David Oliffe left the band for previously unknown reasons, whereupon a replacement was found in Hamish Rosser. Craig also brought his long-time school friend Ryan Griffith into the band to support him on guitar.

The second album Winning Days was released in 2004. A change of tempo and the mixture of hard rock music and soft ballads make the follow-up a worthy successor, which however never came close to the sales figures of Highly Evolved . There were also some scandals. During the US tour, they were unloaded at the Tonight Show after Nicholls destroyed studio inventory during rehearsals. Two days later there was a fight between bassist Patrick Matthews and Craig Nicholls at a concert in Boston, whereupon Matthews left the stage and announced his departure from the band a few days later.

In November 2004, as part of a trial against Craig Nicholls on charges of property damage (destroying a photographer's camera), Dr. Tony Attwood , the Asperger syndrome , a spectrum of autism , diagnosed, and he was acquitted of the judiciary. People with this form of autism can be gifted, but often need help in their daily lives to find their way around their world. For this reason and on the advice of the doctors, The Vines will not start tours in the traditional sense for the time being. Contrary to many rumors, however, awareness of Nicholl's disease did not lead to its resolution.

Instead, the band was working on their next studio album Vision Valley in 2005 , which was released in July 2006. After a two-year break from the stage, the band celebrated their comeback in September 2006 at the Australian festival “Splendor in the grass”. The following two concerts in Sydney and Melbourne were sold out very quickly.

In March 2008 a “Best of” was released by the band, a compilation of the songs from the first three studio albums. On July 12, 2008, the band released their fourth studio album, Melodia , in Australia , which contains 14 tracks. It was produced in Los Angeles by Rob Schnapf, who already worked on the first two albums. Melodia was released in Germany on October 17th, 2008. The first single from the fourth album is called He's A Rocker .

The album Future Primitive followed in 2011 . reached number 24 on the Australian charts. The album was released through Sony Music Entertainment . The album experimented with electronic elements on some tracks. In 2012, Nicholls hit the headlines again when he was arrested after attacking his mother and hitting his head twice during a family quarrel. He resisted his arrest.

After the failure of their last albums, the band turned their backs on the music industry. Her next album Wicked Nature reached number 29 on the Australian charts and marked her first self- release , which was self-financed and crowdfunded . Wicked Nature is a double album .

In 2018 her last album In a Miracle Land was released , like the previous album as an in-house production.

The band maintains friendly contacts with Youth Group , The Strokes and Supergrass , among others .
