The Gütersloh Theater is a theater building in the East Westphalian district town of Gütersloh .
building
The city's old theater in the Paul-Thöne-Halle was closed in 2003 for security reasons (lack of fire protection). After the closure, theater performances took place in the neighboring town hall in Gütersloh . The new building was preceded by a referendum in 2003, which was against the expensive new building approved by the city. The Hamburg architect Jörg Friedrich delivered this design for the new theater . He now presented the city with a slimmed-down (530 instead of 700 seats), cheaper version, which was then also implemented after the decision's binding period had expired.
The foundation stone was laid on October 11, 2008. A 24 meter high building was erected on an area of 2086 m². The new so-called vertical theater opened on March 13, 2010. Instead of being wide, the theater building extends upwards, crowned by a "sky lobby" on the top floor. The first play performed was Gypsy Boy .
Christian Schäfer has been director of the Gütersloh Theater since March 2013 and is the successor to Klaus Klein , who retired in 2013.
The costs of around 21.75 million euros were largely borne by the taxpayers; In addition, there was a donation of five million euros from the local companies Miele and Bertelsmann as well as from numerous citizens.
