Theobald Ziegler

Theobald Ziegler (born February 9, 1846 in Göppingen (Württemberg), † September 1, 1918 Sierentz in Alsace ) was a German philosopher .

Life

Ziegler studied theology and philosophy at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen , and during his studies he became a member of the Tübingen royal society Roigel . After completing his studies, Ziegler first became a repetitionist at the grammar school in Heilbronn, in the same position he also taught at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen . After further years as a high school teacher in Winterthur and Baden-Baden, he became vice rector of the Protestant high school in Strasbourg in 1882. In 1884 he completed his habilitation in philosophy, and from 1886 to 1911 he taught as a full professor of philosophy at the University of Strasbourg. He spent the years of retirement in Frankfurt am Main. He died (according to A. Buchenau's obituary, see below) "in a field hospital in Alsace".

Ziegler represents the learning of the nineteenth century with his works. At the same time, with his book "The Spiritual and Social Trends of the 19th Century" (1899), he became an authentic chronicler of the latter. In addition to his historiographical work, he was involved in the context of contemporary liberal-democratic efforts in the social and religious issues of the day.
