Theoderich († February 2, 880 near Ebstorf near Lüneburg ; also: Dietrich ) was the third bishop of Minden from 853 to 880.

The name Theodoric comes from Old High German and means one who is mighty among the people .

Bishop Theoderich was in correspondence with Magister Fuldensis and historian Rudolf von Fulda († 865), a student of Hrabanus Maurus .

In 865 he took part in the consecration of the Benedictine monk St. Rimbert as Archbishop of Bremen , as well as in the consecration of the Hildesheim Cathedral , built by Bishop Altfrid in 872.

In 871 he founded a canonical monastery in Wunstorf on his inheritance . He died in the year 880 together with Bishop Markward von Hildesheim , Brun von Sachsen , the eleven Counts Wigmann, Bardo, Bardo and Bardo, Thiotrich and Thiotrich, Gerrich, Liutolf, Folkward, Awan, Liuthar, as well as the 14 officials Bodo, Aderam, Alfuin , Addasta, Aida, Aida, Dudo, Wal, Halilf, Humildium, Adalwin, Werinhard, Thiotrich and Hilward in the Norman Battle of 880 , a battle of the Christian Saxons near Ebstorf against invading pagan Normans . The Saxon army suffered a terrible defeat.

Theodoric is said to be buried in the Wunstorf monastery that he founded . The other fallen were buried in three different places on the battlefield and were soon venerated by the people, but then fell into oblivion until their graves were miraculously rediscovered. Count Volrad von Danneberg then built the Ebstorf monastery around 1150 , to which the bones were brought.

Theodoric is venerated as a saint and martyr . His feast day is the day of his death, February 2nd.
