Karl Theodor Pyl (born November 10, 1826 in Greifswald ; † December 13, 1904 there ) was a German historian .

Life

The Pyl family has its origins in the neighboring Hanseatic city of Stralsund. As the son of the Greifswald lawyer Gottfried Theodor Pyl (1791–1853), Pyl studied art history, literature and philosophy at the universities of Greifswald , Göttingen and Berlin . In 1853 he completed his habilitation at Greifswald University. Later he also turned to archeology and mythology. In 1865, Pyl was appointed head of the Rügisch-Pomeranian department of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology and he regularly gave lectures on regional history. In the same year Pyl also became head of the Academic Coin Cabinet in Greifswald. In 1879 Pyl was appointed professor of regional history at the University of Greifswald.

Theodor Pyl was chairman of the Greifswald committee of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology and, since April 24, 1885, also an honorary member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology . In 1895 Pyl became the Red Eagle Order IV class and in 1900 the Crown Order III. Class awarded.

Theodor Pyl was married to Louise Lucée, the daughter of a lieutenant from Verden. The couple had two children: Agnes Pauline (1856–1885) and Paul Gottfried Theodor (1860–1935).

From today's perspective, Pyl is significant as a regional historian for Western Pomerania . With the history of the Cistercian monastery Eldena and the history of the Greifswald churches and monasteries , he made important scientific contributions. Pyl also wrote historical novellas and the dramas Albrecht Dürer , Pontius Pilatus and Heinrich Rubenow or the foundation of the Greifswald University . Pyl worked as an author for the biographical encyclopedia » Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie « and wrote more than 80 articles, mainly about people related to Pomerania and Rügen .
