Theodor Stolojan (born October 24, 1943 in Târgovişte ) is a Romanian politician and member of the European Parliament .

Life

From 1961 to 1966 Stolojan studied economics in Bucharest . He then worked as an economist for six years in a Bucharest refrigeration technology factory. In 1972 he moved to the Romanian Ministry of Finance. From 1978 to 1982 he was head of a department that administered foreign exchange . In 1988 he became Director of the International Financial Relations Department within the Ministry. After the revolution of 1989 Stolojan remained in the Ministry of Finance and from June 1990 to April 1991 took over the office of Finance Minister under Prime Minister Petre Roman . In May 1991 Stolojan became President of the National Agency for Privatization.

As Prime Minister he headed the government cabinet from September 1991 to November 1992 in a very difficult economic situation for Romania.

From 1993 to 2000 Stolojan worked at the World Bank .

In 1996, he supported the presidential candidacy of post-communist Ion Iliescu . In 2000 he returned to politics as an opponent of Iliescu and unsuccessfully applied for the office of president of the National Liberal Party (PNL). For the 2004 presidential election he was the original candidate of the alliance DA, consisting of the PNL and the PD ( Partidul Democrat , Democratic Party ), but withdrew his candidacy for health reasons in favor of the later elected Traian Băsescu .

After he had failed in an attempt to get the PNL to merge with the PD and to leave the international liberal umbrella organizations, Theodor Stolojan founded the Partidul Liberal Democrat (Liberal Democrat) in December 2006 together with Valeriu Stoica and other like-minded ex-PNL politicians -Democratic Party). This merged in December 2007 with the PD to form the Democratic Liberal Party ( Partidul Democrat Liberal , PD-L), whose deputy was Stolojan.

In the parliamentary elections in November 2008 , Stolojan ran as the top candidate of the PD-L and was then nominated by President Traian Băsescu for the office of Prime Minister. After conclusion of the coalition negotiations with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), however, he surprisingly withdrew. In 2007 Stolojan successfully stood for the party he had initiated in the by-elections to the European Parliament, which had become necessary in Romania due to accession. In the European elections in 2009 he was re-elected for the PD-L in the European Parliament, where he became a member of the board of the EPP group.

He is considered a technocrat and relatively independent.
