Theodor Ritter von Taussig (born July 22, 1849 in Prague , † November 24, 1909 in Vienna ) was an Austrian banking specialist. Among other things, he was governor of the Austrian Boden-Credit-Anstalt .

origin

His parents were the head of the calico printing plant in Holleschowitz Hermann Elias Taussig (1813-1891) and his wife Clara Klaber († 1853), the daughter of an arithmetic teacher.

Life

Theodor Taussig moved to Vienna in 1862, attended the commercial college and from 1866 worked in the Landauer & Goldschmidt bank. From 1871 he was Vice Director of the Vienna Exchange Office, in 1872 its director. In 1873 he moved to Boden-Credit-Anstalt and in 1874 became a member of the board of directors. He led the restructuring of the bank, which was badly damaged by the stock market crash of May 1873.

He built the Austrian Boden-Credit-Anstalt, originally a mortgage credit institution , into a leading major bank in the Danube Monarchy . Initially intended to issue Pfandbriefe and municipal bonds on acquired mortgage claims, the Boden-Credit-Anstalt under Taussig developed in a versatile manner in connection with the new ventures promoted by the state and the city of Vienna. It managed the assets of the imperial family fund and was viewed by the imperial family and the Austrian government as a counterweight to the Rothschild banking house. At that time, the Boden-Credit-Anstalt paid the highest dividends in the Danube monarchy. In 1908 he became governor of this institute; from 1907, Taussig was also president of the Neue Wiener Sparcassa.

Taussig, an extremely cautious man, was considered the “most outstanding banker in the country”, as Ludwig von Mises noted in his “Monetary Theory” on the occasion of the description of a controversy between Carl Menger and Taussig about the relevance of changes in the value of money in relation to the preparation of the balance sheet.

As a capital and main shareholder representative as well as president of the Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company and board member of the Austrian Northwest Railway , he played a central role in their nationalization. Taussig's successor was Rudolf Sieghart , who was known to be extremely willing to take risks .

As a member of a Jewish family, from 1901 to 1906 he was a board member of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Vienna .

His house at Gloriettegasse 47–49 was built by the well-known architect Karl König (1841–1915), the artistic design of the dining room came from Josef Engelhart .

He is buried in the old Jewish cemetery of the Vienna Central Cemetery .
