Building history

Franz Egon von Fürstenberg-Stammheim had the building erected as a mausoleum in memory of his father Theodor von Fürstenberg-Stammheim. The original location was the old cemetery (the later Ehrenhain) at the confluence of the Ruhr and Möhne near the Fresekenhof . The city of Neheim also approved the building application with regard to the support of the deceased in the great city fire of 1807, the famine of 1817 and the dysentery epidemic of 1819. The builder was J. Bruere. He is also said to have built the castle chapel of Stammheim Castle , which was destroyed during the Second World Warhave erected. No other buildings by him are known. From 1835 he was chairman of the Kölner Kunstverein.

In addition to Theodor von Fürstenberg-Stammheim, his sister Maria Franziska von Weichs-Körtlinghausen and his sister-in-law Klara Fernandine von Fürstenberg-Herdringen were also buried in the mausoleum. The bones were transferred to the Apollinaris Church in Remagen in 1966 .

In 1979 the chapel stood in the way of the construction of the A445 . The state conservator demanded that the chapel be preserved. It was dismantled at its original location and rebuilt in a restored condition on the Möhnefriedhof, where it served as a cemetery chapel. The chapel was inaugurated at the new location in 1980. The Fürstenberg house waived all claims, so that the building became the property of the city of Arnsberg. The building is entered in the list of monuments of the city of Arnsberg .

Building description

According to an architectural-historical expert opinion by Dorothea Kluge from the 1970s, it is a “high quality plastered brick building in the strict antique style of classicism .” There is a stylistic similarity to Karl Friedrich Schinkel and his students. The small two-axis hall has a flat roof. In front of it there is a gabled column portico . The building is based on a temple in the Doric style . There was also a retracted semicircular apse . The building rests on a base with steps at the front.

The actual burial chamber is located below the hall. It is only exposed through round oculi . The walls of the chapel are structured on the outside by plastered corner pilasters , horizontal bands and ashlar plaster. In the gable of the portico is the coat of arms of the von Fürstenberg family . A cross can be seen on the top of the gable. At the gable corners there are palmette sacroteries .

The frames of the windows and the entrance door are made of cast iron. Above the entrance door is the inscription: “ Here rests Hermann Theodor Reichsfreiherr von Fürstenberg-Stammheim, born in Herdringen on January 17th, 1771. Married on May 25th, 1793 with Sophia Freifäulein von Dalwig-Lichtenfels, died June 7th, 1828 in Neheim. "

The inside is provided with colored ashlar plaster. In the apse, which is only lit from above, there are three niches with figures that represent the virtues of faith, love and hope. The figure of hope, damaged over time, was recreated in 1987. The figures wear antique robes and are influenced by the model Bertel Thorvaldsen .
