Theofried Baumeister OFM (born April 3, 1941 in Recklinghausen ) is a German Catholic church historian . He was Professor of Ancient Church History, Patrology and Christian Archeology at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Mainz . Through his research he has made a name for himself in particular in the areas of hagiography and coptology .

Life

Baumeister came in 1960 in the Saxon province of the Franciscan order and studied at the Franciscan High School in Warendorf , later in Münster and Paderborn philosophy and Catholic theology before 1966 priests ordained was. He then received his doctorate with Bernhard Kötting at the University of Münster , where he then worked as a research assistant from 1971. He also held a lectureship at the Franciscan Order College in Münster.
