Thomas Fischer (ancient historian)

Thomas Fischer (born September 23, 1944 in Tübingen ; † January 31, 1994 in Bochum ) was a German ancient historian and numismatist .

Thomas Fischer was the grandson of the orientalist Enno Littmann and the son of the physician Herbert Fischer . After graduating from Uhland-Gymnasium Tübingen , he studied Ancient History, Egyptology and Classical Archeology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1963 to 1969 . In 1970 he received his doctorate in Munich with a thesis supervised by Hermann Bengtson on Antiochus VII's campaign against the Parthians . He then worked as a research assistant in Tübingen at the Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East and in 1976 moved to the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he worked as a lecturer and head of the ancient coin collection. 1984 followed the habilitation. Until his death in 1994, Fischer worked as a private lecturer.

His main research interests were Seleucid numismatics, especially in connection with biblical history, as well as Roman numismatics and the philosophy of antiquity . He was the editor of the “Little Booklets of the Coin Collection at the Ruhr University Bochum”.
