Thomas G. Turner

Thomas Goodwin Turner (born October 24, 1810 in Warren , Rhode Island , † January 3, 1875 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1859 to 1860 .

Early years and advancement

In his youth he worked with his father on a freighter that operated between Warren and Newport . He then worked in a haberdashery store, which he later became a partner. Then he got into the insurance business, where he made it to the president of an insurance company.

Political career

Thomas Turner became a member of the Republican Party . In 1857 he was elected as their candidate for lieutenant governor of Rhode Island and in 1859 for the new governor of his state. Turner was a follower of Abraham Lincoln . Even so, in 1860 he failed to reappoint his party's nomination for governor. After his tenure as governor, Lincoln, now elected president, made him head of federal taxation in the first district of Rhode Island. He was also a curator of Brown University and a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society.

Turner was a director of the Warren Manufacturing Company , the First National Bank of Warren , the Mechanics Machine Company, and other companies including another bank and railroad company. He died in January 1875. He had seven children with his wife, Mary Pierce Luther.
