Thomas Maria Weber (born December 24, 1953 in Bockum-Hövel ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Thomas Maria Weber (since 2016 Weber-Karyotakis) studied from 1974 to 1982 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Oxford Classical Archeology, Ancient History , Byzantine Studies and Early Christian Art History . The doctorate took place in 1982 in Mainz with a dissertation on the subject of bronze jugs. Studies on selected archaic and classical metal oinocho forms in Greece and Etruria . In 1982/83 Weber received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute and then in 1984/85 he was a consultant at the Damascus department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). In 1985 he became head of the Amman branch of the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies in the Holy Land . Funded by research and habilitation grants from the DAI and the German Research Foundation (DFG), Weber worked on his habilitation on the subject of Gadara Decapolitana. Investigations into the topography, history, architecture and the fine arts of a "Polis Hellenis" in the East Bank . In 1996 he received the Venia Legendi at the University of Mainz, where he has been teaching since 1994. Between 1995 and 1997 Weber was also editor-in-chief at the Philipp von Zabern publishing house in Mainz, where he was in charge of the magazine Antike Welt . From 1997 to 2008 he was a sub-project leader at the Collaborative Research Center 295 of the DFG at the University of Mainz. Between 2001 and 2003 Weber held a visiting professorship in Paris and as Chercheur Associé des Center national de la recherche scientifique in Nanterre . In 2003 he headed the Syrian-European project “Arab Image Databases” in Damascus. A year later he was appointed adjunct professor in Mainz. Since 2008 Weber worked on the project Sculptures from Roman Syria II. The Marble Sculpture . From 2010 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Jordan in Amman. Since 2016 he has been teaching as a long-term lecturer for the German Academic Exchange Service at the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the German-Jordanian University in Amman.

Weber is a corresponding member of the DAI. He carried out excavations and field research in Greece , Syria , Jordan , Yemen , Saudi Arabia and Libya . He is a specialist in Greek and Etruscan Toreutics , historical geography , Roman sarcophagi, Roman and early Christian-Byzantine architecture, Byzantine realism, Roman sculpture from the Near East and image databases in cultural studies. In 2018 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
