from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Martyn (* before 1760 in Coventry , † 1816 ) was a British malacologist , entomologist and draftsman.

Live and act

Little is known of Martyn. It is proven from around 1760. Martyn had a private drawing and drawing school in London, where he particularly taught drawing of objects from nature. Judging by the information in his books, he has received high honors from various kings. His works, some of which he dedicated to kings (according to the English entomologist Charles IV of Spain ), were excellently furnished and printed.

In 1784 he published a book about mussels and snails, for which he made drawings with students ( translated into French by Jean-Charles Chenu ). It was based on large collections in London, particularly from the Pacific. In 1792 an entomological book followed with drawings, especially of beetles . He was also a political pamphleteer.

He was sometimes confused with the botanist of the same name, Thomas Martyn .
