Thomas Matta

Thomas Edwards "Tom" Matta (* 1966 ) is an American jazz trombonist , composer and arranger who works as a university professor in Chicago.

Live and act

Matta earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music theory and composition from the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Northern Colorado , and studied bass trombone at DePaul University in Chicago , composition and arrangement with Thomas Wegren, R. Evan Copley, Robert Ehle and Frank Mantooth . In Chicago he is active as a studio and theater musician; he worked u. a. as a musician with the Woody Herman and His Orchestra , the Frank Mantooth Jazz Orchestra, Aretha Franklin , Natalie Cole , Harry Connick Jr. , Johnny Mathis , Doc Severinsen , Art Garfunkel , Jimmy Heath , Frank Sinatra junior and for the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, The Colorado Symphony and Concertante di Chicago, as composer and arranger for Clark Terry , Randy Brecker , Bill Reichenbach and Mattis Cederberg . Matta teaches jazz composition, arrangement, trombone and bass trombone as an Associate Professor at DePaul University. In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 1989 and 2012, including a. with the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hessen and with Bob Lark and His Alumni Big Band. In 2012 he released the album Components: Tom Matta Big Band . In 2013 a tribute album to Woody Herman followed.
