Thomas Söding

Thomas Söding (born January 10, 1956 in Hanover ) is a German Catholic theologian and professor of New Testament exegesis at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

Education

After graduating from high school in Bad Harzburg in 1974 , Thomas Söding studied Catholic theology , German language and literature and history at the Wilhelms University in Münster and received a diploma in Catholic theology in 1979 . In 1980 he completed his first state examination for teaching at grammar schools in German and became an assistant at the New Testament seminar of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Münster. In 1985 he received his doctorate, the subject of his dissertation was Markus' understanding of faith . In 1991 he completed his habilitation (The commandment of love with Paul ) , which Karl Kertelge looked after, from.

Teaching

From 1989 to 1993 Thomas Söding was a lecturer in exegesis at the Hildesheim seminary and from 1991 to 1993 private lecturer at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Münster. In 1993 he became professor of biblical theology at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

From 1995 to 1999 he was Dean of the Department of History - Philosophy - Theology at the University of Wuppertal and from 1996 to 2004, together with John Reumann, headed the "Biblical Theology" seminar at the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas , an association of New Testament scholars.

In 2008 he was offered professorships for New Testament exegesis at the Universities of Freiburg and Bochum. In the 2008/2009 winter semester he moved to the Ruhr University Bochum, where he succeeded Peter Dschulnigg (1943–2011). He held his inaugural lecture on January 15, 2009 with the topic: “New thinking. Original Christianity as an educational religion ”. Together with the social ethicist Joachim Wiemeyer, he developed the concept of an interdisciplinary and international summer school "Bible - Economy - Ethics" from a collaboration with the KU Leuven.

From 2013 to 2015 he designed and developed the “Youth Bible of the Catholic Church” with Georg Fischer SJ, Dominik Markl SJ and Michael Langer, which appeared in 2015 with a foreword by Pope Francis and has been translated into numerous languages.

Since 2017 he has been the dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum .

research

Thomas Söding deals with topics of New Testament exegesis and theology. He is specifically dedicated to questions of an ecumenically sensitive history of reception. His main research areas lie with Markus, Paulus and Johannes. He develops the methods of historical-critical and literary exegesis further by including the canon from an aesthetic reception and hermeneutic point of view. His main focus is on questions of Christology and Ecclesiology. An integrative project relates to educational research.

Together with Reinhard von Bendemann , Peter Wick and Markus Tiwald , Söding founded the research association “New Testament an der Ruhr”, which regularly holds conferences on publications on topics such as “City” and “Work”.

World Bishops Synod on “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church”. In October 2012 Söding took part as an expert in a Synod of Bishops on the subject of “ New Evangelization ”.
