Thomas Szekeres (born April 6, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian human geneticist and specialist in clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics. In June 2017 he was elected President of the Austrian Medical Association to succeed Artur Wechselberger .

life and career

Thomas Szekeres received his doctorate in 1988 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics at the same university in 1994. In 1994 he also qualified as a university lecturer for medical and chemical laboratory diagnostics at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 2003 Szekeres completed his PhD at the University of Trnava and finally received his second specialist in human genetics in 2005. Since 1997 Szekeres has been a senior physician at the Clinical Institute for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna (today Medical University of Vienna ).

Szekeres has been a board member of the Medical Association for Vienna since 2001 and its president since 2012. In 2005 Szekeres became chairman of the works council for scientific staff at the Medical University of Vienna. Szekeres has also been President of the Austrian Medical Association since 2017.

Szekeres made it into the headlines of the Austrian media repeatedly through activities as the chairman of the works council at the Vienna General Hospital and through his election as president of the medical association. When Szekeres was elected President of the Vienna Medical Association in 2012, this was described in the media as a "historic upheaval", as the previously black-dominated Medical Association had elected a Social Democrat to this position for the first time. In addition, Szekeres is the second employed doctor to hold this position since the beginning of the history of the Medical Association. Szekeres was already present in the media when, as chairman of the works council for medical staff, he led a protest against planned austerity measures and downsizing. In fact, Szekeres achieved an increase in financial resources through the protests, which was counted as a great success.
