The Thoraxklinik Heidelberg is a lung specialist clinic and is part of the Heidelberg University Hospital. It is located in the Rohrbach district of Heidelberg .

History and meaning

The clinic was founded in 1899. In the 1920s she moved into Rohrbach Castle , which had previously served as a World War II military hospital and later as a tuberculosis hospital for the LVA Baden. The castle is still part of the modern clinic and is used for training purposes.

The Thoraxklinik Heidelberg is one of the oldest and most important facilities of its kind in Europe and is important far beyond the regional area. For many tumor patients from Germany and Europe, it is the last point of contact. It is a maximum care hospital with a history of over 100 years and has been a certified lung cancer center and accredited weaning center since 2009 . It is a subsidiary of the Heidelberg University Hospital and works closely with the German Cancer Research Center. The clinic is one of the partners of the National Center for Tumor Diseases Heidelberg (NCT) and is one of the Heidelberg locations of the German Center for Lung Research. As one of the largest lung specialist clinics in Germany, medical services and around 2,300 operations in the field of thoracic diseases are carried out with 310 beds and 4 operating theaters. A special focus is on the treatment of lung diseases, the pleura, the mediastinum, the chest wall and adjacent regions.
