Thorsten Loch

Thorsten Loch (* 1975 in Andernach ) is a German officer ( lieutenant colonel ) and military historian .

Life

Loch joined the armored infantry troops of the German Armed Forces in 1995 as an officer candidate . From 1998 to 2002 he studied history and social sciences at the Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg .

He then worked as a historian officer with the 21 Panzer Brigade in Augustdorf. In 2004 he became a research assistant at the Military History Research Office (MGFA). In 2006, with Bernd Wegner's dissertation, The Face of the Bundeswehr - Soldier Images in the Context of Media Communication Strategies in Volunteer Recruitment, he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he became company commander to secure company in the guard battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense (MoD) in Berlin. From 2009 to 2010 he was a lecturer in military history at the Army Officers School (OSH) in Dresden.

Since 2010 he has been a research assistant at the MGFA in Potsdam, initially responsible for the operational support module. From 2013 to 2015 he worked in the research area “German Military History since 1945”. In 2015 he became acting head of the project area “History of Alliances” within the research area “Military history after 1945”. His main research interests are German military history, social history and historical imagery.

He is part of the editorial team of the military history magazine (MGZ). In 2019, Loch received the advancement award for military history and military technology history for his habilitation thesis .
