The Thun AG is a manufacturer of ceramic - and gift items based in Bolzano (South Tyrol).

history

The company was founded in 1950 by Count Otmar and Countess Lene Thun as a ceramic workshop in the Klebenstein manor in Bolzano. In the first few years the figure of a singing angel was created, which as the original Bolzano angel has become an internationally known company symbol.

In 1978 his son Peter Thun took over management of the company. In the following decades, Thun developed into an international company. Mondo Thun employed over 5000 people in 2010, had an annual turnover of approx. 195 million euros and had more than 1600 sales outlets in Europe.

In the course of the financial crisis, there was a sharp drop in sales of 18% (2012) and 12% in 2013 to EUR 136 million. The number of employees worldwide also fell to 1,385. At the end of 2013, the company had 1,555 sales outlets and 324 Thun stores.

The most important markets are Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain. Thun publishes around 600 new products annually. In addition to ceramic items from the gift and decoration area, Christmas items, coffee services and home accessories, the classic product range has been expanded in recent years to include new fields such as fashion jewelry and children's items. The Thun Club for fans of the brand , which was founded in 1998 and is mainly active in Italy, now has around 97,000 members.

In 2002, the Thuniversum opened as a multimedia showroom and main store at the company's headquarters in Bolzano. With around 400,000 visitors annually, it is one of the city's biggest tourist attractions.

In 2003, four franchise stores opened in Italy and one in Germany. The number of employees was 1,500 and the turnover was 89 million euros.

In 2004, 1,500 of the 1,870 employees worked in China, where a large part of the production takes place. The turnover was 94 million euros.

Thun Logistics was established in 2008: The 35,000 m² logistics center in Mantua (northern Italy) controls the distribution of goods for Thun AG with an automated sorter system. A second main store is attached to it.

The Countess Lene Thun Foundation , founded in 2008 by company president Peter Thun, is committed to social issues such as hospitals, old people's homes and orphanages in Italy, other European countries and Africa.
