Deoxythymidine ( dT ) is selected from the nucleobase thymine and the pentose D -Desoxyribose constructed nucleoside , as the common constituent of deoxyribonucleic acid occurs (DNA).

It is often called thymidine for short with the older trivial name, which is still in use , but should not be confused with ribothymidine , the nucleoside made up of thymine and ribose, which occurs as a rare component of ribonucleic acid (RNA), for example in tRNA molecules.

The thymine contained in deoxythymidine forms a base pair with the nucleoside adenine of the nucleoside deoxyadenosine (dA) in a double strand of DNA .

The nucleobases adenine (A) and thymine (T) form a base pair via two hydrogen bonds
