The deep lake in Potsdam is east of the center between the Berlin suburbs in the north and west and the Babelsberg park in the south and east. The Havel flows through it and is therefore part of the federal waterway Potsdam Havel with waterway class IV, a branch line of the Lower Havel waterway for which the Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible.
On the western shore of the lake is the newly built cultural and commercial location Schiffbauergasse with the Hans Otto Theater .
